SIDE PATHS
Interesting things happen off the main path.
Games, images, sounds and experiments born from fun, curiosity and a desire to see what might be possible next.
GAMES
Games, simulations and entire worlds.
A few games I have released or made available to play over the years.
Taajama Online · 2026—
A Finnish-language city-building game in the browser. Every resident is born, grows up, falls in love, starts a family and forms opinions about your decisions. The local newspaper reports on real events in the game.
Adventures of Frederik Ceppo · 2014—
A point-and-click adventure about an ordinary person without special powers or a dramatic backstory. The game is still unfinished, but it will be completed. Despite that, Ceppo has appeared in several articles and even been the subject of a thesis.
CuBest · 2014
Simple cube turning. The game itself is extremely easy. The interesting question was whether a player could become hooked on a game whose only task is to swipe the screen to rotate a cube. It seemed they could.
The Incinerator · 1994–95
My first published game, included on several American game compilation discs.
Soundscapes and music.
I occasionally make ambient music and photograph interesting subjects when they catch my eye. In sound, I enjoy the journeys and images music creates, and the small glimpses that individual sounds bring into those worlds.
Another long-standing interest runs in a different direction. Since the 1990s I have explored how sound affects relaxation, sleep and calming the mind, using brainwave audio, solfeggio frequencies and many kinds of noise, of which white noise is the best known.
In images I look above all for atmosphere. The subject may be a tiny natural detail nearby, an industrial machine at the other extreme, or something created entirely from imagination.
You can find my images and some sound-related work on Instagram at @sampel_art ↗ and on the Peltomaan Rakettitiede YouTube channel ↗. I am also a co-founder of the Rauma Electronic Music Association.
LABS
Projects born from interest and curiosity.
Living Machine:Tetris+BLOOM
A self-playing Tetris whose agent learns generation by generation from eight factors. No neural network, GPU or cluster. The BLOOM view turns the agent's data stream into a living, beautiful and musical whole.
Phenocolor
A free colour-palette tool open to everyone, built in the OKLCH colour space. It keeps perceived lightness balanced and shows how the palette's contrast ratios meet accessibility requirements.
